Application Administrators:
- Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York
- LASPAU in Cambridge, Mass.
- AMIDEAST in Washington, D.C.
- Jan Hostetler, Director of Graduate Admissions at UNL
Application process:
- Students are selected to receive the Fulbright scholarship by special panels in the home country.
- IIE is the largest organization that works with Fulbright fellows from around the world.
- Applications are sent electronically to UNL for manual entry into UNL system.
- LASPAU works with students from Central and South America. LASPAU submits the online UNL application and mails materials to us.
- AMIDEAST works with students from the Middle East. AMIDEAST submits the online UNL application and mails materials to us.
- All application materials received are forwarded to departments, either electronically or in paper. Students handled by IIE, LASPAU, or AMIDEAST do not submit their own applications.
- Questions regarding application materials need to be directed to the placement officer at the agency or to Jan.
- Note: Fulbright Commissions in a few countries (for example, Japan and Turkey), do not handle student placement but instead ask students to submit the application directly according to normal university procedures. This is only a small number of applications.
Documents received from agencies include:
- Agency application form
- Applicant’s academic records and test scores (accepted as official by OGS)
- Statement of purpose and CV prepared by applicant
- Letters of recommendation
- In some cases, writing samples
Funding:
- UNL provides a tuition waiver up to 30 credit hours/year while the student is funded by Fulbright.
- Fulbright provides a stipend for living expenses, fees, books, travel, and health insurance.
- The length of the scholarship award is stated in agency application information and may vary.
- Students who use their Fulbright funding to pursue a master’s degree and then decide to continue on in a doctoral program do not receive additional tuition waivers or Fulbright stipends. They must either provide their own funding or be funded by the doctoral program.
- Admission decisions
- Processed by Graduate Studies and communicated to the agency, who then informs the student.
- Departments may contact students directly, but such communication is not official.
- The agency and Graduate Studies are central to the admission process, which includes the provision of a tuition waiver and the preparation of a student visa.
