The School of Art, Art History, and Design offers an M.F.A. in studio art.
Description
M.F.A. candidates may focus their study in one or a combination of the following studio areas: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Each graduate student is provided a shared workspace as well as access to general work areas, a digital lab, and a well-equipped art fabrication shop.
A resource that enriches the artistic climate of the School is the Sheldon Museum of Art, which houses one of the finest university collections of 20th Century American art.

Applying for Admission
Standard requirements for all graduate programs
- Application for Admission with $50 non-refundable application fee.
- Transcripts (unofficial): Uploaded as part of application form.
If International: Uploads must include all college- or university-level transcripts or mark sheets (records of courses and marks earned), with certificates, diplomas, and degrees plus certified English translations.
After admission: Official documents are required from all students who are admitted and enroll. Photocopies of certified records are not acceptable. International students enrolled in other U.S. institutions may have certified copies of all foreign records sent directly to the Office of Graduate Studies by their current school’s registrar office.
- If applicant’s native language is not English, verification of English proficiency
is required.
When sending TOEFL scores, our institution code is 6877 and a department code is not needed.
- If applicant is not a US citizen and expects an F or J visa: financial information.
- Applicants must also fulfill any additional requirements the department specifies at the time of application.
Additional requirements specific to this program
- Resume/CV: 1-3 pages (please including a list of your significant exhibitions)
- Personal Statement: Describe your goals in entering the program.
- Letters of recommendation from three individuals who are familiar with your work.
- Portfolio and Artist Statement (20 images of your recent work and your artist statement. Both are submitted via Slideroom. Note: the URL is published inside the UNL application for admission).
- URL Link to Personal Website (optional): if you do not wish to include a URL, enter ‘N/A’ to continue through the application.
